A readable paragraph and a faithful account of speech are different editing goals. Verbatim transcription aims to preserve spoken detail; cleanup makes choices about what to remove or reorganize. Before comparing apps, decide which spoken details matter to the task and which changes you are willing to review.

Neither label proves the text is error-free. A recognizer can substitute a word, and a later writing pass can reshape a correctly recognized sentence. Evaluate those two stages separately whenever your workflow allows it.

Transcript style can begin inside recognition

Microsoft's MAI-Transcribe documentation, marked public preview, describes verbatim output with fillers and false starts, and clean output that removes fillers. These are provider-described styles, not proof of perfect fidelity. Microsoft's MAI-Transcribe documentation.

This distinction matters when a product offers an additional AI writing stage. The text arriving at that stage may already reflect recognition and transcript-style choices. Switching off a separate formatter does not necessarily restore every hesitation from the recording.

Define the changes you actually want

Consider this original spoken passage: “Um, send the draft on Tuesday, sorry, Thursday, but only if Jo confirms. I think the cost is about eighty dollars. Don't call it approved.”

There are several different editing decisions here. Removing “um” may improve readability. Resolving the explicit Tuesday-to-Thursday correction may also be appropriate for a final message. Preserving the conditional approval, estimated amount and prohibition is essential to the intended meaning.

Spoken detailQuestion for your review
Filler soundCan it disappear without changing the purpose of this text?
Explicit self-correctionShould the draft keep the sequence or the final corrected statement?
“Only if Jo confirms”Did the dependency survive unchanged?
“I think” and “about”Does the result still describe an estimate?
“Don't call it approved”Was the prohibition retained rather than reversed?

A hypothetical polished draft saying “Send the approved draft Thursday for eighty dollars” would lose three meaningful qualifications. That is an illustrative failure case, not output observed from a particular model.

Choose the output for its intended use

A rough idea may benefit from preserving unfinished thoughts so you can develop them later. A final work message may benefit from shorter paragraphs and removed filler sounds. A record intended to show how someone phrased a statement needs different editing choices from either.

Write an instruction appropriate to the use: “Keep tentative wording and conditions. Remove clear hesitation sounds. Do not add facts, recipients or commitments.” If self-corrections matter, state how to handle them. Avoid combining a request to preserve every spoken word with a request to rewrite freely; the reviewer needs a clear target.

Test meaning with a reference, not appearance

Create a small set of passages containing a name, a quantity, a correction, a dependency and uncertainty. Write down the intended meaning before recording. Where a workflow supports it, compare a direct transcript with a separately formatted version and keep the settings with the results.

Mark recognition substitutions first. Then mark deletions, rewritten relationships and added information. Ask whether each transformation was requested. Count the edits needed to make the output fit the task, without treating every punctuation change as a meaning error.

Repeat with a straightforward passage too. A test set containing only tricky cases can help find failures but will not describe your ordinary workload. Use this process to choose the amount of cleanup that suits your writing and review habits.

Understand Sonicribe's boundary

Exactly as spoken skips the separate AI formatting pass. Choose your word replacements and Voice commands settings for the draft you want, and set Settings → Listening → Leave out ums and uhs to your preference. Use a short sample to compare the wording before adding a rewrite.

For a formatted workflow, read the independent model guide and custom rules instructions. Continue with Mac Dictation versus AI writing or the speech-to-text trends review.

Use the examples above to choose the level of cleanup you want. Keep a short sample and compare the wording before settling on a style.
