Mac Dictation and AI writing answer different questions. Dictation captures speech as text; a writing stage changes the resulting draft. When comparing workflows, start with how much change you want between speaking and sending. A rough note, a message and a structured brief need different amounts of organization.
The useful choice is often among direct dictation, dictation followed by a separate writing pass, and a voice workflow that applies your chosen formatting instructions. Compare the finished task rather than assuming the most polished first draft is the best result.
What Apple's two tools do
Apple describes Dictation as entering text where you can type, with punctuation and formatting commands; some features depend on the language. Apple's Dictation guide.
Apple separately documents Writing Tools for selected text: rewriting, proofreading, summarizing and changing tone. Apple notes that availability depends on language and region. Apple's Writing Tools guide. These are documented capabilities, not evidence that a particular rewritten paragraph will preserve every qualification.
That separation gives you a useful checkpoint. You can inspect recognized words before deciding to change the prose. In a workflow that combines those steps, deliberately include a review before you use the result.
Decide what must survive the writing pass
Take an original spoken draft: “I can probably send the design tomorrow if Nia finishes the review. Please keep the existing layout. I am asking about the estimate, not approving it.”
Before evaluating output, identify the commitments. “Probably” is uncertainty. “If” introduces a dependency. Keeping the layout is a boundary. Asking about an estimate is not approving it. Shorter sentences and tidier paragraphs are useful only if those relationships remain intact.
A hypothetical edit that says “I will send the design tomorrow and approve the estimate” would be fluent but wrong. This is an illustrative failure case, not an observed result from Apple, Sonicribe or another product.
Compare three tasks separately
| Task | Useful starting approach | Review focus |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a private rough idea | Direct dictation into a suitable destination | Recognized words and unfinished thoughts |
| Prepare a short work message | Dictation, then a limited writing pass | Tone, dates, owners and uncertainty |
| Produce a repeated brief format | Voice input with explicit structure instructions | Missing constraints and added commitments |
For each task, prepare a passage you might actually say. Keep the content non-sensitive when evaluating a new service. Use the same intended meaning across workflows, while recording any differences in instructions or settings.
Save the initial text when possible. Review wording before formatting, then review the final draft. Write down whether you corrected recognition, changed layout or restored meaning. This separates a wrongly recognized name from an unnecessary change to a correct sentence.
If you measure time, include the whole sequence: starting input, speaking, waiting, reviewing, correcting and placing the text in its destination. A quick first draft may still require a long review. No timing result is claimed here; this is a method for measuring your own task.
Apply the comparison to Sonicribe
Sonicribe's reviewed Exactly as spoken mode uses No formatting. A formatted mode adds a separate writing stage when an available formatter is selected. Sonicribe remains a cloud workflow requiring internet, a Google account and an Apple Silicon Mac; speech and formatting use shared credits.
For a baseline, read the Exactly as spoken guide. If the words are right and the organization needs work, the Clean prose formatting guide explains the released writing controls. Check the main guide for setup rather than assuming every installed configuration starts the same way.
Choose the approach that leaves the fewest meaningful repairs for your particular task. Revisit the choice when the task changes: the amount of cleanup you want for an email may be inappropriate for a rough idea. Use the examples above to compare recognition, cleanup, and the time you spend reviewing a finished draft.
