Speaking gives you room to think while you compose. That often includes an “um,” an “uh,” or a thoughtful “hmm” before the useful part of a sentence. Removing those sounds can make a draft easier to read without asking you to rehearse the whole paragraph first.

Set the switch once

In the preview, filler removal is a Settings setting shared across styles. It starts off. You decide whether this cleanup fits your writing, rather than having to maintain a separate preference for every style.

  • Open Settings.
  • Under Text, find Leave out ums and uhs.
  • Turn the switch on when you want spoken hesitation sounds cleaned from your output.
  • Record a short sample in the style you normally use.
  • Read the result before pasting or sending it.

Switching from one style to another does not create a separate filler preference. Return to Settings to turn the same setting off when you want to preserve those sounds. This matters if you alternate between polished writing and notes that need to retain your spoken phrasing.

Test with a small, recognizable example

For a first check, dictate something like:

Um, the first draft is ready. Uh, please review the introduction before Thursday.

The intended cleaned draft is:

The first draft is ready. Please review the introduction before Thursday.

Use this example to compare the draft with the wording you dictate. Check that cleanup preserves the deadline and requested action. A smoother sentence still needs your review for names, numbers, and meaning.

Keep cleanup separate from rewriting

Filler removal has a narrow purpose. Choosing a writing style or adding formatting rules shapes the draft in other ways. AI writing presets can independently ask their formatter to clean filler sounds. If the result feels too formal or changes its structure, inspect those style settings as well as the filler switch. Turning off the global switch does not undo that preset instruction or other formatting rules.

Sonicribe Cloud uses an internet connection and a signed-in Google account. Processing may take time, and text processing can affect the shared credit allowance. Do not judge a cleanup setting only by whether the final paragraph is shorter; check whether it produces a useful draft for your actual task.

If a meaningful sound disappears

Turn the switch off and make a new short recording. For material where hesitation itself matters, keep cleanup off and review the transcription manually. Correct a completed result before copying it, and avoid assuming that changing a setting will rewrite an earlier history entry.

The filler removal instructions show where this setting belongs. For additional control over the structure and tone of your draft, see custom styles and formatting rules.
