Writing a formula from speech requires attention to small details: a minus sign, a variable, a decimal or a parenthesis can change the expression. Math style turns clearly dictated operations into written notation while keeping surrounding prose in the spoken language.

Its job is transcription. It does not calculate, solve, simplify or correct the mathematics. If you dictate an incorrect equality, the style is instructed to preserve the stated result. Checking the formula remains your responsibility.

Dictate the whole expression

  • In Styles, select Math.
  • To create a copy, use New style → Template → Math, review the prompt preview, choose an available speech model, and click New style.
  • Check Text formatting in Rewrite.
  • Use Today's Start listening to test the selected style in-window. For global shortcut dictation into another app, set Default style to Math for unmatched destinations or link the app/site under Linked apps or Linked websites. Linked matches take priority over the default.
  • Speak every operand, variable, operation, sign and grouping element you need. Include a result only if you want that result transcribed.
  • Stop recording and compare the written expression with the formula you intended.

The preset's illustrative example is:

six plus three minus two divided by seventeen equals nineteen

The intended notation is:

6 + 3 − 2 ÷ 17 = 19

The right-hand value is retained because it was dictated, even though that equality is not mathematically correct. This makes the boundary between transcription and calculation explicit. Do not use the appearance of an equation as evidence that Sonicribe verified it.

Make grouping unambiguous

If parentheses matter, dictate them. “Open parenthesis six plus three close parenthesis divided by seventeen” expresses a different grouping from “six plus three divided by seventeen.” Review the actual symbols after processing rather than relying on how natural the spoken sentence sounded.

Dictate plus, minus, multiplication, division, equals, parentheses, decimals, and percentages clearly. State grouping in the order you want it written, then review the notation in your destination app. Keep the spoken expression nearby while adjusting the draft’s presentation.

Surrounding prose should remain in its spoken language. That is useful for a note such as “The expression we are comparing is…” followed by the formula. Read both parts for accuracy before using the note elsewhere.

Recover from a changed symbol

If a number or variable was misrecognized, make a shorter recording and state it clearly, or edit the draft directly. Check microphone and language settings if ordinary words are also wrong. Changing the writing prompt cannot reconstruct a missing operand from unclear audio.

For a direct transcript comparison, use Exactly as spoken. The Math instructions provide the control reference, and the model guide explains how recognition and notation formatting are separate stages.
