A useful first dictation is a paragraph you already need to write. Open a note, put the cursor in an empty text field, and speak one complete idea. This gives you a clear way to judge the result: did the right words reach the right place, and how much editing did they need?
Sonicribe records your microphone, processes the recording when you stop, and can paste the resulting text into your destination app. Cloud processing requires an internet connection, a Google account and available credits on an Apple Silicon Mac.
Prepare the destination before speaking
Automatic paste depends on the text field and macOS permissions as well as transcription. Start with a blank draft rather than a message ready to send. Placing text in a field still leaves you responsible for reviewing and sending it.
- In Sonicribe, set Styles → Default style to the style you want for destinations without a linked style. Start with Exactly as spoken to evaluate the recognized words before adding AI formatting. If the destination has a linked app or site style, that match takes priority; check or change the link first.
- Open Settings → Shortcuts and check your assigned recording shortcut. The default is ⇧ Z (Shift+Z); use your assigned keys if you have customized it.
- Click inside your destination text field, then start recording with the configured shortcut.
- Speak a short paragraph and stop recording with the configured control. Wait for processing to finish before starting another recording unless you have explicitly enabled the processing queue.
- Review the inserted text for names, numbers and the intended meaning.
For a first test, dictate: “The design review is Thursday. I will bring the updated mockups, but the pricing section still needs approval.” A successful draft should preserve both the plan and the qualification. This is a test phrase, not a promise of identical recognition on every recording.
You can also select a style and use Today's Start listening and Stop Recording controls to review the in-window result. Home uses the selected active style. Global shortcut recording reselects a linked app/site style or the Default style, so selecting a style card alone does not set the style for that destination.
Use permissions to recover a missing paste
Microphone permission lets Sonicribe record. Accessibility permission lets it automate paste into another app. These are separate permissions in macOS System Settings.
If recording works but automatic paste does not, follow Sonicribe's Accessibility prompt and enable the app under Privacy & Security → Accessibility. The completion path copies the text to the clipboard before attempting automatic paste, so you can return to the intended field and paste manually. Check the destination for an existing insertion first to avoid duplicating the paragraph.
If no audio was captured, check Privacy & Security → Microphone and the input selected in Sonicribe. If processing fails, check the connection and Account rather than repeatedly recording the same material.
Build a repeatable habit
Keep early recordings short enough to review easily. Correct unusual spellings through Words, and move to a formatting style when you have a specific output shape in mind. Measure the complete task, including corrections; speaking time alone does not tell you whether the workflow saves time.
Use the recording instructions for the control reference, or compare the Exactly as spoken workflow before choosing a style.
